One of the best things about second semester of law school was that your classmates stopped dressing up for class. The professors stopped calling on you to recite a case and settled into more of a lecture format. It would be commonplace to see girls come to class sans makeup and in old jeans and a sweatshirt. Dare we admit that we were did this also? You betcha! It was comfy!
The same can be said about friends. Have any friends that you are “breaking in?” Like how it feels? It’s kinda like a comfy sweatshirt.
Says Kim:
I had great plans to go to the gym today. The gym bag was packed. The diaper bag was loaded down with wipes, diapers, apple juice sippy cup, ziplock bag of animal crackers, iPhone, iPod, mints, Mommy’s water bottle and elastic headband, and a bottle of Purel (can’t be too careful). I was just about to head out the door when my phone rang and it was Julie.
The other half of Mommy, Esquire has had it rough as of late. Poor baby went to Vegas, saw Jersey Boys, ate delicious food, and got stranded at the airport in Atlanta last night. (notice the sarcasm here) I know that Julie is one heck of a Momma and wanted to get to her babies, but I told her to enjoy her time at the airport. “Get a snack, a drink, a Town & Country magazine….and relax! When will you get time alone for a while? The airport isn’t that bad of a place to be stranded. It isn’t like you are stuck in the Greyhound Bus Station.” However, I didn’t realize that Julie had been awake for over 20+ hours and was feeling as sleep deprived as a prisoner of war, which isn’t the good kind of stranded.
Bless her little Viva Las Vegas heart!
Well, Julie called me this morning to recount her misfortune last night. AND I have to admit that it was awesome to hear her voice. I love it. I love to hear everything that is going on with my dear friend. We’re like the comfy sweatshirt folded in the bottom drawer.
Right after I hung up with Julie, another friend, Lulu, called. Lulu* (not her real name, but I thought she’d appreciate the anonymity) and I are new friends. However, she called to tell me about this and that. Our conversation wasn’t about anything devastating, but Lulu and I are talking about stuff beyond kids, restaurants, clothes, knitting, etc. There is something really nice about talking about serious business and then bursting into laughter. I think there’s something to that research that says having friends makes you healthier.
So comfy...worn out with a few spots and stains...but, totally and utterly comfortable
Anyway, a good conversation with a friend can be very comforting….just like my old law school sweatshirt.
I never made it to the gym, but I felt physically good from having several good belly laughs. I think that’s worth something. Oh, heck. I’ll go work out tomorrow. Fiddle dee dee. Tomorrow is another day.
